Tangent/Secant Formulas on the GMAT

Tangent/Secant Formulas on the GMAT [#permalink] New post   19 Jan 2010, 05:14
Hi,
I have seen few Tangent, Secant formulas/rules in one of the gmat quant documents. However, I have never seen any questions which require knowledge of secants or tangents. Can anyone comment if mugging these up is any use ? Are they outside the scope of the gmat ?

I'd recommend understanding the core concepts, like the tangent is perpendicular to the radius or diameter of the circle, and the like. Similar things apply to secants as well. I'd also recommend learning the co-ordinate geometry concepts related to circles, such as equation of circle given coordinates of center and a radius, equations of lines for radius/tangent/secant etc etc.

Geometry on the G-day can rip anything apart, trust me, anything!!!!

Usually you can solve most questions in several ways and I would agree with you that you don't have to know these formulas. Moreover, Geometry is not a very common subject and you will see only 2-3 questions max. However, this is one of those bonus point things - you may want to know/be aware of them just in case as they may provide a shortcut that will save you a minute of time. Chances that you'll use them are low, but still there.

True. This sounds similar to a friend of mine who got a question on Harmonic Progression on the gmat back in 2007. Nowhere have I seen people discussing anything beyond A.P and G.P and even he was caught unawares at that time. He got a Q50 in maths though. As Barney suggested, I suppose u never know for sure what the gmat is going to throw at you!

Edit: I just noticed I mentioned 'Q50 in maths' above:)) Wonder if anyone got a Q50 in verbal!
