1. "inspired and knowledgeable science teachers" is not equal to "teachers with science degrees".
- Logically, any science teacher would be required to have a science degree.
- So, out of all science teachers - an inspired and knowledgeable science teacher can excite students about science.
2. 3rd statement (An inspired and knowledgeable science teacher can excite students about science, thus encouraging them to get a degree in science) bridges the gap between:
- Lower proportion of college students who get a degree in science, and
- Lower proportion of secondary-school teachers who have a degree in science.
- The third statement explains how a higher proportion of science teachers can increase the proportion of college students who get a degree in science.
- Thus, it presents a reason to arrive at the conclusion.

The author's logic doesn't need to be airtight and could easily be flawed too. He equates "inspired and knowledgeable" to science degrees and that is his logic.
In this question you are not required to judge his logic - all you have to do is find the option that rewords his conclusion.
