Teas worth $126 per kg and $135 per kg are mixed with a third variety in the ratio 1 : 1 : 2. If the mixture is worth $153 per Kg , the price of the third variety per Kg will be?

A. $147.50

B. $155.50

C. $175.50

D. $258.50

E. $785.50

Solution:

If we let x = the unit price of the third variety of tea, we can create the equation:

(126 + 135 + 2x ) /(1 + 1 + 2) = 153

(261 + 2x)/4 = 153

261 + 2x = 612

2x = 351

x = 175.5

* ratio is 1:1:2

* you can use the ratios as the weights, as you would in a weighted average.

* 126* (1/4) + 135* (1/4) + x* (1/2) = 153

* x= 175.5
