TEST CENTRE ISSUE GMAT SCORE

Question

Hello,

I couldn't attempt the last question on my quant section due to some technical issue on the exam, I clicked multiple times and the option didn't get selected. I score Q46 AND V41 with a 710.

Is there a chance GMAC will consider this and count the last question as attempted an re-evaluate my score?
I have raised the issue with the test centre and talked to Pearson and the test centre will create a case they said.

Also no one responds on the gmac helpline number, they're asking me to record a message.

Hi. Sorry about the glitch with the last question. We have heard reports of a number of different issues with the test but nothing of the sort exactly.

It is not likely to make a difference really. Leaving a question answered does have a small penalty of about three percentiles. That doesn’t mean your quan score will go from Q 46 to Q 49. Most of the time it does not make any movement at all unless you are on the verge. We don’t know that unfortunately but because the quantitative percentiles are so widely spread out, more often than not, it makes no difference.

PS. There was a case of this week of a person who had an issue with their AWA. They had a technical issue that resulted into a very short essay in the low grade. It was not clear what they wanted to do but I think they wanted to invalidate only the essay but keep the other score. In any case, GMAT and Dilip canceling the entire score and giving them a free retake 😬 I don’t think this is a likely situation for you but you have to be careful what you ask for.

So I spoke to the test centre and person and they will create a case. If they validate that there was an actual issue will GMAC consider this and maybe count the last question as attempted? the thing is I'm aiming for the likes of Foster/Tepper/Anderson, and I don't have enough time for a retake

Oh. I missed the fact that this was a test center. Interesting. I think that makes it more credible and serious.

I'm so disappointed, sorry for bothering you with this. I had been scoring consistently well on quant. And I will take it for the third time if I take it again this month.

R1 deadlines are early October, there's no chance I'll be able to make the application if I retake it right?

Hi Karan911,

While I understand why you're upset by this situation, there's a pretty good chance that it had no real impact on your Score results - and won't actually impact your applications in any material way. You're actually asking about a couple of different subjects, so let's start with the immediate issue.

It's certainly possible that having one more correct answer at the end of the section could increase your Scores a little (MAYBE you could have ended up with a Q47 and a 720... but then again, maybe not). However, that assumes that you actually had the correct answer AND that it was not an 'Experimental' question (re: the ones that do NOT count towards your Score). Considering both of those 'unknowns', the probability that you actually lost points as a result of not receiving credit for answering the last question is relatively low.

The second issue is whether you should apply for Round 1 or Round 2 - and that's really a far broader discussion than whether your last Quant question impacted your Score or not. At face value, with a 710/Q46, you can apply to just about any Schools/Programs that interest you. You might run into some issues with Finance-based Programs, but if your OVERALL profile is strong, then the Q46 wouldn't necessarily keep you from earning an invite. Since you know the specific Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

In addition, you could potentially take the GMAT a 3rd time AFTER you have already submitted your application(s). Many Schools will allow Applicants to provide supplementary information to their submissions after the fact (if it's something noteworthy - such as a promotion, receipt of an Award or other 'honor' or a significantly higher Test Score). As such, IF you really want to retest, then you don't necessarily have to do so in the short term.
