The analytics department of a company published an urgent document to directorate members, the core of which being a warning of the inefficiency of a certain strategy utilized to improve the performance of level four employees in the company. The document contains a graph displaying the improvements, all of them positive, in the performance of the level four employees in the company since the implementation of the strategy.

Which of the following, if true, best reconciles the seeming discrepancy described above?

A. Although the performance of the level four employees improved as a result of the strategy, the amount of mental effort that the employees had to invest into their work was higher than before the implementation of the strategy.

B. According to the hierarchy of the company, regular level four employees are ranked higher than the highest employee in the analytics department.

C. The improvements in the performance of the level four employees do not yield a financial return that is significantly greater than the investment required to execute the strategy.

D. By displaying the positive effects of the strategy, the analytics department hopes that the decision-making members of the directorate will be more open to a continuation of the strategy.

E. The strategy, focusing on the improvement of the performance of a specific group of employees, must have been created with the characteristics of both the tasks and the personal skills of those employees in mind.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The analytics department of a company published an urgent document to directorate members, the core of which being a warning of the inefficiency of a certain strategy utilized to improve the performance of level four employees in the company. The document contains a graph displaying the improvements, all of them positive, in the performance of the level four employees in the company since the implementation of the strategy.

Which of the following, if true, best reconciles the seeming discrepancy described above?

A. Although the performance of the level four employees improved as a result of the strategy, the amount of mental effort that the employees had to invest into their work was higher than before the implementation of the strategy.

Incorrect.

This is a Paradox question, so it is made up of premises only; you need to find a new premise which best resolves the apparent discrepancy between the existing premises:

Premise A: a document shows that a strategy to improve employee performance is not efficient

Premise B: the document shows that since the strategy was implemented, employee performance has improved

Resolving Premise: ?

This answer choice basically states that the employees had to think harder once the strategy was being used. However, since this mental effort had no negative consequences, this answer choice fails to explain why the analytics department is against the strategy.

B. According to the hierarchy of the company, regular level four employees are ranked higher than the highest employee in the analytics department.

Incorrect.

This answer choice does nothing but give us details about the hierarchy of the company in the argument. Since the paradox deals with changes in the performance of the level four workers, the position of the employees in the analytics department is irrelevant.

C. The improvements in the performance of the level four employees do not yield a financial return that is significantly greater than the investment required to execute the strategy.

This answer choice opens us up to a third possibility: although the strategy has increased performance, maybe it had cost the company far more than it earned. Therefore, because the strategy could actually be costing the company a lot of money, its efficiency is still in question.

D. By displaying the positive effects of the strategy, the analytics department hopes that the decision-making members of the directorate will be more open to a continuation of the strategy.

This answer choice gives us the impression that the analytics department wants the strategy to continue. The first premise clearly states that they believe it is inefficient.

E. The strategy, focusing on the improvement of the performance of a specific group of employees, must have been created with the characteristics of both the tasks and the personal skills of those employees in mind.

Incorrect.

This answer choice emphasizes the paradox. If important factors such as the tasks and personal skills of the employees were taken into consideration, then the strategy's is more likely to be successful, and the analytics department's objection remains a mystery.

Hello Bunuel,

I was stuck between A and C. I chose A because the paragraph talks about "**inefficiency** of a certain strategy" and according to choice A "the amount of mental effort that the employees had to invest into their work was higher than before" hence I inferred it to be causing the inefficiency. Similarly I rejected choice C because paragraph never mentions about profitability or better financial returns.
