hello Ram!

I think the problem is 'a nature' vs 'nature'. Since nature is uncountable, you have to omitt the'a'. You can not say 'a milk or an information', but you can say 'the milk, the information' or 'a bottle of milk'!

cheers

The assembly speaker has called for a shorter fall session of the legislature in hopes that less amendments of a purely symbolic nature will be proposed by state's lawmakers

A) in hopes that less amendments of a
amendment is countable, therefore fewer
B) hoping that fewer amendments that have a
refers to amendments, which is wrong
C) in hopes that fewer amendments of a
'a' is wrong
D) in order that less amendments of a
amendment is countable, therefore fewer
E) in hope that fewer amendments of
nature is not countable, therefore omit 'a', 'in hope' is better, best answer

great explanation.
i have a question. if answer C did not have the 'a' in the end, what would have been the best answer? C or E
does 'in hope' or 'in hopes' make a difference??

Re: The assembly speaker has called for a shorter fall session [#permalink]
Answer is E

First of all ammendments is a countable noun and hence "fewer" should be used and not "less". This eliminates A & D straight away.

Also, the singluar hope instead of plural hopes is more appropriate because there is a single hope of "less ammendments". This eliminates C. Also in C there is no need to use "a" before purely symbolic nature.

In B, the modifier "hoping" incorrectly refers to legislature instead of assembly speaker (remember the modifier modifies the noun closest to it). Hence it's wrong.

Hence E is the right answer.
