The average (arithmetic mean) of 3a+4 and another number is 2a. What is the average of the other number and a ?

a. 2a
b. a-4
c. a-2
d. a+2
e. a+4

I tried to solve this as follows:

((3a+4)+x)/2 = 2a

Need to get the equation to show, x+a/2 = ?

3a+4+x = 4a
3a+x = 4a-4
a+x = (4a-4)/3
(a+x)/2 = (4a/3)/2 - (4/3)/2
(a+x)/2 = 2/3(a) - 2/3

Help!

the wording of the question is incorrect, you should be looking for x (the other number)

from your equation x = a -4 => B

Your question is perfectly ok. It is D.

((3a+4)+x)/2 = 2a
3a+4+x = 4a
x = 4a-3a-4=a-4

the average of (a-4+a)/2=(2a-4)/2=a-2

found a-2

((3a+4)+x)/2 =2a
solving 3a +4+x=4a
= a-4

SO this other number is a-4

(a-4 +a )/2=2a-4/2
PUT 2 IN FACTOR
2(a-2)/2
cancel 2 out and here you go !!!

Other number = 2*2a -(3a+4) = a-4

Average of a-4 and a is a-2
