A. 2a
B. a - 4
C. a - 2
D. a + 2
E. a + 4

Let the other number be x. $$\frac{(3a + 4) + x}{2} = 2a$$ -> $$x = 4a - 3a - 4$$ -> $$x = a - 4$$

Therefore, the average of a and a - 4 is $$\frac{a + (a - 4)}{2} = \frac{2a - 4}{2} = a-2$$ (Option B)
