Solution

To find:
• The average (arithmetic mean) of the coordinates of the 7 labeled points on the number line is how much greater or less than the median of the coordinates of the 7 labeled points

Approach and Working:
The points are:
• A: -4
• B: -3
• C: 0
• D: 1
• E: 2
• F: 3
• G: 4

Average = $$\frac{1}{7} (-4 + -3 + 0 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4) = \frac{3}{7}$$
Median = 4th term = 1
• Average – median = $$\frac{3}{7} – 1 = \frac{-4}{7}$$

Hence, the correct answer is option E.

Average of the seven points is $$\frac{-4 - 3 +0 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4}{7}$$ = $$\frac{3}{7}$$

Median of these seven points is 1

So, The Median is less than the Average by $$\frac{3}{7}- 1 = \frac{4}{7}$$, Answer must be (E)
