Re: The average (arithmetic mean) of three positive integers [#permalink]

The average (arithmetic mean) of three positive integers \(a, b,\) and \(c\) is 2. Is the range of the three numbers greater than 2?

(1) \(a - b=1\)

(2) \(c\) is the largest of the three numbers.

From the information we know that (a+b+c)/ 3 = 2 -------> a + b + c = 6

Statement 1:
a-b = 1
Case 1 ---------- a = 2, b = 1, c = 3 ------- range = 2
Case 2 ---------- a = 3, b = 2 and c = 1 ----- range = 2
There can be no other case hence the range is 2
SUFFICIENT

Statement 2:
C is the largest of 3 integers
Case 1: c = 3, b = 2 and a = 1 -------- range = 2
Case 2: c = 4, b = 1 and a = 1 ------- range = 3
We already heave a conflict hence this statement wont help
NOT SUFFICIENT
