The average weight of n students in a certain class was 24 kg. A new student named Jack joined the class and one existing student named Carol left the class. What is the new average?(1) Carol's weight was 1 kg more than that of Jack.(2) Carol's weight was 24 kg. Statement 1:
We can infer that the new total weight of the n students is 24*n-1, however in order to know the average we need the number of students, suppose for a moment that n=1 (this is not necessary, any arbitrary value can be taken but it's just to amplify the effect), thus Carol was the only student which was then replaced by Jack, then the average would drop by a whole kilogram, if we instead say that n=10 then the average would drop by a mere 100 grams.
Statement 2:
Similarly to statement 1 we can't say the number of students n, nor we know the weight of Jack, if anything this statement is worse than statement 1.
Statement 1&2:
It should be clear that both statements together do not provide nearly enough information to answer the question
The answer is
E.
