lets expand the second part of the sentence
more than 3/5th married couples now have 2 incomes, significantly more than..... 2 possibilities......1. that referring to "incomes" so significantly more than incomes in previous decades....which is clearly wrong.........2. that referring to couples...significantly more than couples in previous decades" does it make sense........?? No.!

THIS is special pattern of comparison, in which the second part of comparison contain only verb phrase, or adverb phrase.
we can not insert any kind of subject in the the second part of comparison. remember this idiomatic pattern to feel easy
