I am failing to understand how resident feeling unsafe links to actual reduction of burglaries ?? Seems like a huge gap with the argument and answer choice B.
chandy123
Answer:

B. Surveys indicate that a majority of Greenfield residents feel unsafe at night due to poor street lighting.

Explanation:

Option B strengthens the city council’s plan by highlighting that poor street lighting is a significant concern among residents, implying that upgrading street lighting would directly address a key factor contributing to the perceived and possibly actual increase in burglaries. This aligns with Lakeside’s successful strategy, making the proposed plan more likely to be effective in Greenfield.

Breakdown of the Question Creation:
1. Develop a Clear Argument:
• Premise 1: Greenfield’s current method (enhanced police patrols) hasn’t reduced burglaries.
• Premise 2: Lakeside successfully reduced burglaries by implementing a neighborhood watch program and improving street lighting.
• Conclusion: Greenfield should adopt a similar neighborhood watch program and upgrade street lighting to reduce burglaries.
2. Determine What to Strengthen:
• The effectiveness of the proposed solution in the context of Greenfield’s specific circumstances.
3. Create Answer Choices:
• One Correct Choice (B): Directly supports the effectiveness of the proposed solution by linking residents’ concerns to the plan.
• Other Choices:
• A: Introduces a comparative factor but doesn’t directly strengthen the argument.
• C: Presents a potential drawback, weakening the argument.
• D: Suggests an alternative reason for Lakeside’s success, which might weaken the direct applicability of the solution.
• E: Provides additional information but doesn’t directly strengthen the proposed plan.
4. Ensure Logical Consistency:
• The correct answer should clearly support the effectiveness and relevance of the proposed solution in addressing the specific issues faced by Greenfield.
