Final Score - 680: IR 6, Q 48, V 35 all self study, materials listed below.
First and foremost: I was aiming to score a 700 on the exam. This score was reflected in one of my practice GMAT exams where I scored a 46Q and a 40V, however I did not take it full length. I almost always show up on test day, and can't stand the thought of sitting through an entire full-length practice exam, so I'm most likely going to accept my 680. Here is an overview of the exams I took, where/why I fell short in certain areas, and advice I think everyone taking this exam can benefit from.
Test taking strategiesGuess on what you don't know, as fast as possible. The one rule you need to abide by on the Quant section - "if you look around the poker table and can't spot the sucker, you are the sucker." If you can't identify what is being tested in a Quant question, SKIP IT. Make a quick, educated guess and move onto the next one. You will not know how to solve every single question the GMAT throws at you. If you are in a situation where you don't know the answer, the worst thing you can do is waste precious time faltering. Guess and move on.
Think like the test makerThe Veritas Prep videos really do a great job getting you into the mindset of the test maker. You learn tricks the GMAT employs, and how to identify them.
90% of a problem is identifying what is being testedIf you can identify what the problem is testing, you will be able to solve it by applying a framework that you have used on similar problems. This provides an added level of comfort and accuracy when it comes to test day.
GMAT 1 - 550: IR 5, Q 29, V 38
Q 29 - why? - Spent too much time reading out of the
MGMAT guides, and not enough time completing practice questions. Familiarity with practice questions (OFFICIAL Guide) is paramount to getting a good score. I thought if I read the
MGMAT books and buffed up on the theories, I would be able to apply it without any issues. Not the case. You need to practice official questions.
V 38 - why? -
MGMAT SC, CR, and RC guides helped tremendously.
GMAT 2 - 650: IR 4, Q 48, V 31
Q 48 - why? - Believe it or not, studying all that number theory in the
MGMAT books helped when I was practicing Official Guide problems. I was able to see what properties were being tested, and the problems became that much easier.
V 31 - why? - I over compensated quant.
GMAT 3 - 680: IR 6, Q 48, V 35
Q 48 - why? - I reinforced my quant section with the Veritas Prep foundations lessons and videos available through the iTunes app store. I felt these videos did a great job of connecting theory and application.
V 35 - why? - I used a combination of
MGMAT, Official Guide, and the Veritas Prep video lessons to strengthen my verbal score. This obviously didn't get me to my previous high score of 38, but it proved effective.
