In the original sentence, use of "its" is correct but use of "their" is wrong. In place of "their", sentence should have "its". This is happening sentence E only.
Therefore, E is the answer IMO.

In E we have by its skill
In establishing an overseas colonial empire, The Dutch were aided in shipping and trade by its skills while the United Kingdom lost many of its

It should be their. Only D looks okay

I have a question though. Are we not comparing Dutch with United Kingdom(country); shouldn't it be English.?

A) The Dutch was aided in establishing an overseas colonial empire by its skills in shipping and trade while the United Kingdom lost many of their - 'The Dutch' requires a plural verb form and a plural pronoun 'their', while 'The united kingdom' is singular and should take 'its' as the pronoun.
B) In establishing an overseas colonial empire, The Dutch were aided by their skills in shipping and trade while the United Kingdom lost many of their 'The united kingdom' is singular and should take 'its' as the pronoun.
C) In establishing an overseas colonial empire, The Dutch was aided by their skills in shipping and trade while the United Kingdom lost many of its - 'The Dutch' requires a plural verb form 'were'
D) The Dutch were aided in establishing an overseas colonial empire by their skills in shipping and trade while the United Kingdom lost many of its - Correct use of plural and singular pronouns for both 'The Dutch' and 'The United Kingdom', respectively
E) In establishing an overseas colonial empire, The Dutch were aided in shipping and trade by its skills while the United Kingdom lost many of its - 'The Dutch' requires a plural pronoun 'their'.

Kudos, if you like the explanation.
