The electronics company has enveiled what it claims to [/color]be the world's smallest network digital camcorder, the length of which is that of a handheld computer, and it weighs less than 11 ounces.

a) to be the world's smallest network digital camcorder, the length of which is that of a handheld computer, and it weighs

b) to be the smallest network digital camcorder in the world, which is as long as a handheld computer, weighing

c) is the smallest network digital camcorder in the world, which is as long as a handheld computer, and it weighs

d) is the world's smallest network digital camcorder, which is as long as a handheld computer and weighs

e) is the world's smallest network digital camcorder, the length of which is that of a handheld computer, weighing

Please provide explanation to your answer.

thanks

It took me a while to understand how 'D' could be the right asnwer. 'to' is not underlined in the original stem but it is part of the answer choicese..

If we replace claims with says - the puzzle falls apart

'is' is another form of 'be' - it differs in tense

Btw, Wish you all the best for tomorrow's exam. You should be able to do it. Just be optimistic, mentally strong and stay focussed.

thanks Beyond700. So the construction is suppose to be:

claims + (any conjugation of the "to be" verbs). hmmm....i'm trying to re-analyze this....

the OA is D. but guys, i just reviewed my notes and I DO SEE that the correct idiomatic use is "claims to be." How come "claims to be" here is wrong? just because of recognizing that idiom, i've automatically narrowed my choices to A and B. can somebody please explain? i'm having my test tomorrow :)

thanks

'claims to be' is a correct idiom. However, in this case B is wrong because 'which' incorrectly modifies 'world' instead of 'computer'. This error is fixed in D.

Hope that helps. Goodluck for your test.
