Re: The employee-manager ratio at a certain company was 25:4, but when the [#permalink]
There is no possible new employee-manager ratio from the given information. The problem might be missing crucial details, like the initial number of employees and managers, or there might be an error in the data.

just assume numbers here
25 : 4
250 employees
40 managers
after laid off 170 employees
23 managers
will get approx value

Can you please explain how you got this part after multiplying 25 and 4 by 10?

Thanks...

C. 33 : 5

E. 55 : 4

Hi experts,

Is there a quicker solution than the ones already listed? Thanks.

The employee-manager ratio was 25:4 = 6.25.
The fired employee-manager ratio was 80:17 ≈ 5.

These ratios are close enough; however, in proportion, fewer employees were fired than managers. Therefore, the new employee-manager ratio should be slightly higher than 6.25. Only C fits.

Answer: C.

Alternatively, we could set up an equation for the new employee-manager ratio as (25x - 80)/(4x - 17) and equate this to the given options to check which one of them will give an integer value for x. Again, only C fits, giving x = 23.

Answer: C

Hope it helps.

(25x - 80) / (4x - 17)

The denominator must(?) be odd and luckily the only one that has an odd denominator is C so I went for that. Took me a minute and otherwise I would've been lost.
