BackgroundWhen Shaunak first evaluated his MBA prospects, he was a Lead Engineer at Tridiagonal Solutions after spending nearly eight years at Honeywell managing refinery and automation projects across the EMEA and APAC regions. With over a decade of experience in chemical engineering, his profile reflected strong technical depth, international exposure, and sustained performance in high-pressure environments.
His academic background was equally strong. He had graduated in the top 5% of his class during his Master’s at Texas A&M University with a 3.84 GPA. However, despite his accomplishments, his career trajectory remained heavily technical, while his long-term aspirations were increasingly shifting toward strategy, operations, and broader business leadership.
The Core ChallengeThe primary challenge was positioning a highly experienced technical professional for a full-time MBA program.
With more than 10 years of experience, several schools initially viewed Shaunak as a more natural fit for an Executive MBA. At the same time, his GMAT score of 630 created an additional layer of complexity within an already competitive applicant pool.
A large part of the profile also risked being interpreted too narrowly through the lens of engineering execution and project delivery. While there was clear evidence of competence and responsibility, the broader leadership narrative and business orientation needed stronger visibility throughout the application.
The Strategic PositioningOne of our earliest priorities was reframing Shaunak’s experience from technical specialization to leadership evolution.
Rather than focusing only on engineering outcomes and operational metrics, the narrative highlighted his ability to lead multicultural teams, navigate ambiguity, and manage complex stakeholder environments across international markets. His work during the pandemic and in regions such as Saudi Arabia and Romania became important examples of resilience and adaptability under pressure.
We also focused heavily on his willingness to move beyond traditional engineering boundaries. His transition into software sales support at Honeywell, along with his entrepreneurial venture, Lavanyam Organics, helped position him as someone already developing a broader commercial and strategic perspective rather than remaining confined to a purely technical identity.
The GMAT and Experience StrategyInstead of treating the GMAT score as a weakness to defend, the application focused on demonstrating sustained academic and professional rigor through the consistency of his career and educational background.
His strong performance during his Master’s at Texas A&M University, combined with the scale and complexity of his global engineering work, became central to that positioning. The application emphasized that his analytical ability had already been demonstrated over many years in demanding real-world environments.
At the same time, we built a clear argument for why a full-time MBA made more strategic sense than an Executive MBA. The focus was not advancement within the same technical track, but a meaningful transition toward strategy, operations, and leadership within the clean energy and industrial sectors.
The OutcomeShaunak secured admits to multiple leading global business schools including ESADE, IE Business School, Mannheim, EDHEC, HEC Montreal, and IIM Lucknow.
The final applications successfully positioned him not simply as an experienced engineer, but as a candidate seeking to translate deep technical expertise into broader business and leadership impact.
Key TakeawayExperienced applicants are often evaluated too narrowly through titles, test scores, or years of work experience. The real challenge is demonstrating how that experience has shaped leadership maturity, adaptability, and long-term direction.
In highly competitive MBA admissions, thoughtful positioning and a clearly articulated career transition can often matter just as much as traditional profile metrics.
