Official Explanation

3. For each of the following statements, select Yes if it can be reasonably inferred from the given information. Otherwise, select No.

Explanation

Statement 1: This is unclear. Fumigants are part of the “Other” category of pesticides. U.S. expenditures on “Other” pesticides were 25% of the world’s expenditures, and the United States used 26% of the “Other” pesticides used by the world. However, since “Other” pesticides includes not only fumigants, but also other types of pesticide, you do not know how many pounds of fumigants the United States. and the world used, or how much they spent on them.

Answer: No

Statement 2: This is clear: Tab 1 tells you that the United States spent $4337 million on insecticides, while the world spent no more than $3557 million on petroleum oil (since petroleum oil is part of the “Other” category).

Answer: Yes

Statement 3: U.S. expenditures on herbicides were 38% of the world’s expenditures on herbicides. Additionally, the world’s expenditures on herbicides were 39% of the world’s total expenditures on pesticides. Thus, if the U.S. agricultural sector accounted for 72% of the U.S. expenditures on herbicides, then it accounted for 72% times 38% times 39% of the world’s expenditures on pesticides. This equals 10.67% of the world’s expenditures on pesticides.

Answer: Yes

Official Explanation

1. For each of the following pesticide types, select Yes if the U.S. expenditures on this pesticide type accounted for more than 10% of the world’s total expenditures on pesticides. Otherwise, select No.

Explanation

Statement 1: The table in the first tab tells you that U.S. expenditures on pesticides accounted for 32% of the world’s expenditures on pesticides. Of the total U.S. pesticide expenditures, 47% went toward herbicides, 35% went toward insecticides, and less than 7% went towards fumigants (which are part of the “Other” category). The United States spent on herbicides 47% of the 32% of the total world expenditures on pesticides: this equals 15% of total world expenditures.

Answer: Yes

Statement 2: The United States spent on insecticides 35% of the 32% of the total world expenditures on pesticides: this equals 11% of total world expenditures.

Answer: Yes

Statement 3: The United States spent on fumigants less than 7% of the 32% of the total world expenditures on pesticides: this equals less than 2.24% of total world expenditures.

Answer: No

Hi, looking at question 3.b, there is something that doesn't click on me. It asks if we can infer that "The United States spent more on insecticides than the world did on petroleum oil", while the chart clearly says that"Others" include only the petroleum oil used specifically as pesticide.

In order for the answer to be "Yes", we would have to make the assumption that Petroleum Oil can only be used as a chemical pesticide.

Sajjad1994 could you please clarify?

1. For each of the following pesticide types, select Yes if the U.S. expenditures on this pesticide type accounted for more than 10% of the world’s total expenditures on pesticides. Otherwise, select No.

Herbicides => Yes
0.38 * 0.32 = .1216 = 12.16% > 10%

Insecticides => Yes
0.39 > 0.38 => Surely more than 10%

Fumigants => No
Fumigants is part of the Other
Other: 0.25 * 0.32 = 0.08 = 8% < 10%

2. Assuming that all U.S. pesticide expenditures in 2007 refer to pesticide used in 2007, and also that all expenditures for pesticide used in 2007 weremade in 2007, for each of the following pesticide types, select Yes if the U.S. spent less per pound on this pesticide type than did the rest of the world. Otherwise, select No.

[I suppose the unit in the Tab 2 is something pounds instead of Million of $]

Herbicides => No
For Expenditures, US accounts for the 38% of World
For Amount, US accounts for 25% of World
38% > 25%
=> More $ per pound spent by US than the World avg
=> More $ per pound spent by US than the remaining of the world

Insecticides => No
Similarly,
For Expenditures, US accounts for the 39% of World
For Amount, US accounts for 10% of World

Fumigants => No
We only know that Fumigants is part of the Other.  No further info is provided to answer this question.

3. For each of the following statements, select Yes if it can be reasonably inferred from the given information. Otherwise, select No.

The United States spent less per pound of fumigant used than did the rest of the world. => No
As statement 3 of question 2

The United States spent more on insecticides than the world did on petroleum oil. => Yes
US spent $4,337M on insecticides
World spent $3,557M on Other, including Petroleum oil

If the U.S. agricultural sector accounted for 72% of U.S. expenditures on herbicides, then it accounted for approximately 10.67% of the world’s expenditures on pesticides. => Yes

72% of US expenditures on herbicides: $5856M * 0.72 = $4,216M
% of US agricultural sector's expenditures on herbicides to the World's expenditures on pesticides: \(\frac{4216}{39,943}\) = 10.68%

For question number 2 for fumigants if we look at the others category according to the logic of OA US Amount> US Expenditure i.e. 26% > 25 % therefore it can be inferred that the US spent more right?

Even if let's say we don't know how much fumigants account in Others, then we still can't answer and say No right? Can someone help me with this?
