I am an engineer, so quant was meant to be the section I did not think about. One afternoon in June I fired off four hard Word Problems quizzes back to back. Thirty percent. Twenty. Twenty. Twenty. No pause, no analysis, just frustration, and I wrote in and the first question back was four words long: where is your error log? I said I would do it later. So you did not do it after each test? No. Why? I had nothing.
Two years of knowing everything and scoring nothing
In 2021 I got a 640 on the classic GMAT, booked again a month later, changed nothing, and got 660. In 2024 I came back, bought a full course and finished it in four months. The material was never the issue; what I could not do was test it, because I practised off PDFs, ran my own timer, and kept an error log without knowing if it was right. What brought me back was LMP, where a mentor reads your data for the patterns capping your score. The first call was booked for thirty minutes and ran an hour.
Verbal: killing the "what if"
CR went up and down and up and down: medium was fine, hard fell apart at 70, 50 and 50. Everyone teaches you to identify the conclusion and the negation test. Nobody tells a person who overthinks to please stop overthinking. What changed it was two weeks on Neuron OG, untimed, run through an error log that asks not what you got wrong but at which step you broke. Removing the countdown was what mattered; pre-thinking became automatic. Hard CR went from 50 percent to 70 within days. RC, which I fought to the very end, came good on a two-word summary after each paragraph.
Quant: the error log made me stop trusting myself
Once the log went in, the diagnosis was boring and humbling: I was not getting the maths wrong, I was getting the question wrong. Even, odd, integer, distinct, the words that decide the answer. Or where it asks for x plus 2y and you solve for x, see it in the options and mark it. So: write down the constraints and what is actually asked, then pressure-test that against a clock. That same hard set went from 20 to 50 the next day. The honest part: I got a Q84 on the day, after months at 89, 90 and 87.
Data Insights: quant and verbal are only prerequisites
I walked into the June exam with verbal and quant done and DI barely touched, and got a 615 (V82, Q85, DI75). On the call afterwards I was on a metro, a little devastated and a little happy. Everyone tells you that if your quant and verbal are set your DI is set. It is not true: they are the entry ticket, nothing else. So I went type by type: videos, medium quizzes, hard, error log, again. For MSR, read every tab before touching a question, because the back-and-forth is what bleeds you. Hard DS went from 30 percent to 80. On test day DI went from 77 to 83, and that six-point swing is my whole improvement.
Mocks bounce, and one exam got taken away
635 cold on the first SigmaX, then a 565 a week before the June exam that had me convinced I was good for nothing. Then, on a week of leave in August, three official mocks: 745, 685, 695. Then 17 August, a slot I had taken a week off for. I get to the centre and there is a glitch: wait thirty minutes, and if it is not fixed you cannot sit. It cleared with five minutes to spare. Two stoppages at the end of verbal, two more in DI, and then twelve questions into DI the screen froze for three whole minutes. If I finished I could not get a retest, so I raised the ticket and walked out of 80 percent of an exam. On 7 September: 675 (V83, Q84, DI83), 95th percentile.
What the mentorship actually did
Two things, neither of them content. It caught behavioural patterns I could not see: the missing error log first, then reads like "you are rushing CR and it is costing you your last three RC questions." And it was reassurance when the data was fine but I was not. I was told I would get the blueprint, the wood and the nails, but that I had to build the bridge myself. You do not need 100 percent: about 70 in medium quizzes and 55 in hard. And I am still a bad test taker. I would just rather be a bad test taker in the top 5-6 percentile.
