The letters are just there to trick us. It's 7:55 so either 55 minutes past/after 7 or 5 minutes before 8. Here letters are representing numbers from 1-12, so none of the letters represent 55. In this clock 5 is represent by R so Ans is - R minutes before U.
I don't think these questions are asked in GMAT, still R minutes before U is correct, as the position at which R is 5 And as the clock is at 5 mins Before U, Thats why R minutes before U is correct.
@Bhavitaeg It could not have been N mins before U as, N is at 1 so, That translates to 1 min before U o clock that's would be wrong.
