total area = 36
triangle is spread over 6 boxes
height = 4
base = 1
0.5 *4*1 = 2IMO D

Using 1/2 x b x h = 0.5 x 1 x 4 = 2

If you draw a 90deg line from A to the line C lies on, you'll count four boxes. This line is equal to the height of the triangle, h = 4.

that is fine, but the shaded part i.e the triangle cannot be said to be under 4 complete squares ,or is it?@

I don't quite understand what you mean, but for any triangle the area = 1/2bh
Here, the base is one side of the square so 1. And height is as I explained 4 squares. Height doesnt depend on the number of boxes covered, only the height from the top most box to the bottom most box.
