The first OA is E, the second is B. I believe the second is wrong. But I am worried that the second apparently comes from gmatprep. MATT, are you sure your post is correct?

I would say E as the word former is unnecessary in the sentence.

I would definitely like to know as well. It seems as though the intended meaning is different in each sentence but they are almost identical.
