The flowchart shows the procedures for preparing four traditional Nigerian foods—akara, ewa, gbegiri, and moinmoin—from cowpea seeds.
Reviewing the chart, we see that the four traditional Nigerian foods are the outputs at the ends of the flowchart and that cowpea seeds are the input at the beginning.
Select the options from the drop-down menus that create the statement that is most strongly supported by the information provided.
Preparing each of the foods except for __________ involves __________.
Since the statement is about what preparing "each of the foods except __________" involves, the flowchart element that we choose for the second blank must be one that is involved in preparing all the foods but one. So, we have to be careful not to choose an element that is involved in preparing some foods but is not involved in preparing more than one other food.
Other than that, we just have to be careful how we read the chart since the question-writer made it slightly tricky by having the left side depict a flow to one food while the right side has the flows to two different foods one of which branches off near the bottom of the center flow. So, if we're not paying attention to how the flows work, we could mistakenly decide that some chart elements are involved in preparing foods that they aren't involved in or are not involved in preparing foods that they are involved in.
ln this question, filling the second blank first will be easier and more efficient since, once we've determined which flowchart element is involved in preparing all of the foods but one, we will also know which food's preparation does not involve that element.
Here are our four choices for the second blank:

Glancing over the chart, we see that Clean and rinse is the first element of the process for all foods since all branches of the chart flow from Clean and rinse. So, we can eliminate cleaning and rinsing since it's involved in preparing all four foods.

Another easy one to deal with is dehulling. Dehull appears below Clean and rinse in the chart and thus applies to at least the two foods, Moinmoin and Akara, that are the outputs of the flows in the center of the chart. Reviewing the left and right sides of the chart, we see that Dehull does not appear in the flows for either of the two foods that the left and right flows lead to. So, Dehull is missing from two foods, and thus dehulling is not our answer.

Let's check adding condiments next.
Scanning for "condiments," we see Add condiments and oil in the left flow and the center flow but not in the right flow. Look at the flowchart and identify the 4 foods. Look at the rough flow.

Preparing each of the foods except for___ involves ___.
We need to select a process which is followed for 3 foods but not for 1.
The first blank is just the 4 foods so nothing to check there. Go to the second blank - condiments, boiling, cleaning, dehulling.
Now cleaning is right at the top so done for all 4 foods. Eliminate
Boiling is at the top too and done for 2 foods - Gbegiri and Ewa. It is not done for 2 foods but we can select only 1 food in drop down. Eliminate.
Dehulling is again at the top and is done for 2 foods - Moin Moin and Akara and not for other 2. Ignore.
Adding condiments must be the answer. Search for it. Only Ewa doesn't involve it.
