My answer is (D). It took me 01:31.

The whole sentence is underlined. Go straight to option (A) so as not to be distracted by the underline.

(A) The first issue I noticed is that "with" in "affords the visitor with unparalleled opportunities" is not needed.
A glance over (BCDE) confirms that other sentences offer alternatives.

(B) "permit somebody something" seems a bit unnatural to me...
(C) "give somebody the opportunity to do something" sounds better.
I decided to reverse order at this point.
(E) "has an opportunity to do something" is very similar with (C).
(D) Also uses "has an opportunity"...

Hmm, many options are similar! Only at this moment did I notice the place of "without a guided tour" in (ABCE). Though no reasonable readers might get confused, "without a guided tour" can indeed modify "cutting-edge particle physics research". So, the visitor gains insight into "cutting-edge particle physics research that is conducted without a guided tour".

To avoid such nonsensical interpretation, choose (D) over (ABCE).

took a while to crack this one...
2/3 split opportunities to learn vs opportunity to learn ; since we are discussing about the visitor so the latter is correct ....
eliminate option A , B

C) The Geneva laboratory of The European Organization for Nuclear Research gives the visitor an unparalleled opportunity to learn about cutting-edge particle physics research without a guided tour.
what we have here is a dangling modifier issue.. "without a guided tour"

(E) The visitor to the Geneva laboratory of The European Organization for Nuclear Research has an unparalleled opportunity to learn about cutting-edge particle physics research without a guided tour. same as option C ; dangling modifier issue

(D) Even without a guided tour, the visitor to The European Organization for Nuclear Research’s Geneva laboratory has an unparalleled opportunity to learn about cutting-edge particle physics research. ; essential modifier in the beginning which " Even without a guided tour" modifies the clause further ... correct choice..

OPTION D is correct
