Here's the (D) version.
The golden crab of the Gulf of Mexico has not been fished commercially in great numbers, primarily because of living at great depths - 2500 to 3000 feet down.
Notice that "because of living" does not clearly convey that the golden crab lives at great depths. For all we know from what the sentence says, commercial fishermen or something else lives at those depths. So, the (D) version does not effectively convey its meaning.

There is no rule that "because of + verbing" is wrong. The school was closed because of fighting in the hallways is perhaps an inelegant sentence, but there's nothing wrong with it. Note though that this sentence is passive -- the sentence isn't identifying who was fighting (nor who closed the school), because that's not the point of the sentence. In the sentence in this thread, though, the sentence does want to identify what was "living at great depths". Answer D doesn't do that. Answer C is right because it explains that it was the crab that was "living at great depths", which is clearly what the sentence means to convey.
I also don't think Ron is right when he says ""Because of", on the other hand, should be followed only by a noun that represents an abstraction, such as an event or an idea." I'll just cite two sentences, from two different English grammar websites, that immediately came up when I searched for the phrase:
• from here: "It is because of your mother that we got into this mess."
• from here: "The boys argued because of the broken toy."
"Your mother" and "the broken toy" are not abstractions.
I think a lot of test takers want to learn watertight rules that will let them rule out SC answers merely because certain words appear (there's notoriously bad advice to rule out any SC answer choice that includes the word "being", for example). Simple words and phrases like "because" or "because of" or "being" are used in so many different ways that I don't imagine you'd ever be able to define a simple and genuinely useful rule, free of exceptions, that could be reliably applied in GMAT SC.

As per my understanding 'Because of' is a preposition, and either a noun or a gerund can follow the same. Between Options "C & D", How i can eleminate the D, and Choose C as a correct answer?
