Hi,
I am planning to apply for MBA in the US this year.
I have previously done a Technology Management + Engineering Course which has given be a basic exposure to management core subjects.
While doing research I am finding that one year or the accelerated MBA options that some B-Schools are offering are suitable to me in terms of time, cost and syllabus.
The only thing that is of concern to me is the lack of internship.
I will have 4 years + of WE when the course starts.
I have worked in India (my home country) only.
I would like to go the entrepreneurial route but not immediately post MBA.
I would like suggestions on the following
01. How important is the internship?
02. If I want to shift from Product Management (Industrial) to Strategy / General Management in a (consumer product) corporation or strategic product consultancy, is that considered a career track change? Will it require a internship?
03. Will the lack of internships affect my final placement in any way? Since the schools claim that one year and second year will form a common candidate pool for recruitment.
04. What other disadvantage of 1 year vs 2 year I could face in the long term?
Help would be greatly appreciated.

US 1Y programs are typically geared towards students who studied business/econ/finance as an undergrad, have some sponsorship from their company, and are planning to return to that company. I considered Kellogg's 1Y program, but decided that the lack of internship would have been extremely detrimental to me as a career-switcher. Internship recruiting is hot-and-heavy for 6-7 months, whereas the bulk of full-time recruiting is over in less than 2 months and many companies are only recruiting for the 1-2 spots left after their summer interns signed on.
1. For a career-switch, very important.
2. Yes, that's a career switch.
3. You'll only get one shot at recruiting (full-time) with fewer slots available.
4. Tough to say. It's the same degree, but your network won't be as robust. The primary long-term disadvantages would likely stem from the recruiting ones.

If you have 4 years of work experience, I will strongly recommend a two year MBA program for several reasons:
1. The only difference is of 6 months. A two year MBA is 21 months( including 3 months of paid Internship). These additional 6 months will come with a strong opportunity to experiment, take more courses, and also go through two placement cycles( Internship and Full time). Going through the first cycle is very important as not many of the MBA candidates will be able to get the first preferences in the first round. However, they get another round in the second year.
2. Choices of Schools: Your pool or target schools is wider in a two year MBA program. If you target only one year MBA programs, your options are limited.
3. Financial AID: I do not know your GMAT Score, but a lot of two year MBA programs will offer no-cosigner loans, and scholarships. Those options are limited in 1 year MBA programs.
4. Network: WIDER and STRONGER.
5. Post MBA Careers: I have seen many candidates choosing careers other than what they expressed on the essays. It happens only when you are actively going through recruiting. You get the opportunity to play around different functions and really decide what are you aiming for. With 4 years of work experience, there are chances that you are not sure why you want to be a consultant. We recently conducted a seminar on this too( https://pythagurus.in/mad-series/ )
