Hi,

subject: the increase(singular)...verb has to be used. A and D out.
greater is used of quantitative comparisons.. so B is out.
The concept if elliptical comparison is used over here..C is wrong as was has no comparative reference More X than Y(X and Y has to be parallel)
E is Correct.

The increase in the number and scope of investigations into monopolistic business practices, in addition to the expansion of definitions of such practices, have resulted in more antimonopoly litigation presently than ever before.

The increase in x in addition to xxx , has resulted -> The subject of the sentence increase is Singular so A and D are wrong

(B) has resulted in greater antimonopoly litigation presently than previously -> We can count the number of litigations but ligation itself isn't a number hence we do not use greater than here
Some examples of nouns that are themselves numbers are: percent, interest rate, population, volume, distance, price, cost, and number.

(C) has resulted in more antimonopoly litigation at present than was seen ever before (X than was xxx ) - Not parallel

(E) has resulted in more antimonopoly litigation at present than ever before - No errors and concise

I am confused between C and E. I would go for E. Can someone explain how to deal with these comparisons. Though I did a few in the past these are always confusing

KAPLAN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:



The answer choices indicate that you need to choose between have and has. Since the subject of the sentence is the singular increase, has is correct and you can eliminate (A) and (D). Beware: Even though the sentence discusses the expanded definition in addition to the increase, in addition to does not make the subject plural. Only and can create a compound, or plural, subject in these situations because it unites two subjects into one plural subject. Next, more is correct and greater is not since the sentence doesn't discuss numbers. Eliminate (B). Finally, at present is, however wordy, the correct alternative to presently. Presently, as with hopefully, is an adverb, meaning that it needs to modify a verb (J will perform the task presently). Since litigation is a noun, it requires an adjective, and at present fits the bill. (E) it is.

Could you please elaborate on when more and greater are used in sentences?

More is used whenever we have a non-countable noun (antimonopoly in this case) whereas greater has to be used for countable nouns only. We can simply think of when do we use greater than in daily language.

For example:
1. Bunnuel's GMAT score is greater than 99% of test takers.

We never say (or rather should never say)

2. Bunnuel's intelligence is greater than 99% of test takers.
(As Intelligence is non countable while GMAT score was countable)

Hope that makes it a bit more clear.

(A) have resulted in more antimonopoly litigation presently than ever before - the singular subject 'the increase' cannot be matched by the plural verb 'have'.

(B) has resulted in greater antimonopoly litigation presently than previously - "previously" is an adverb that does not have a follow-up verb that it can modify.

(C) has resulted in more antimonopoly litigation at present than was seen ever before - we have a comparison error here.

(D) have resulted in more antimonopoly litigation at present than ever before - the singular subject 'the increase' cannot be matched by the plural verb 'have'.

(E) has resulted in more antimonopoly litigation at present than ever before - has no error. Hence, (E) is the right answer.
