For Example :

Here "that" refers to defiance.

Another Way of writing :
The temperature we recorded this month is greater than  the temperature  that we recorded last month.

"similar" makes things complicated here... in A, B and C it is definitely used wrong
A says "a similar defiance that welcomed" sounds like defiance that welcomed... but what about "similar"? similar to what? unclear

B same problem as A

C defiance is compared to not defiance but something else

E is out of the ballpark completely

Thus, it's D... D also makes sense "defiance similar to defiance"

D. a defiance similar to that which welcomed -> perfect with defiance is correct then explanation of defiance follows
