"similar" makes things complicated here... in A, B and C it is definitely used wrong
A says "a similar defiance that welcomed" sounds like defiance that welcomed... but what about "similar"? similar to what? unclear
B same problem as A
C defiance is compared to not defiance but something else
E is out of the ballpark completely
Thus, it's D... D also makes sense "defiance similar to defiance"
The inhabitants of Somalia greeted the measures outlawing polygamy with a similar defiance that welcomed the prohibition of alcohol in the United States in the nineteen-twenties.
A. a similar defiance that welcomed -> this wrongly says that inhibitants greeted XYZ with a similar defiance that MNO -> similar defiance to what is missing => with defiance is correct usage here => similar defiance appears to be a noun and is misleading B. a similar defiance which welcomed -> same as above C. a similar defiance to what welcomed -> same as above D. a defiance similar to that which welcomed -> perfect with defiance is correct then explanation of defiance follows E. the same defiance welcoming -> incorrect as above A,B,C
