I'm confused between A and D.

Can you explain what's wrong with both the options?

I think E is completely out bcz of wrong usage of WHO. B is out because we don't use that to refer to humans.
Now focussing on A,C & D. We see that we are dealing with list of things that happened. So, the function is the same all are noun but not in the same format.

A. which make us gasp in wonder at physicists detecting previously predicted phenomena, astronomers adding awe-inspiring details about Pluto and biologists who honed an immunological defence mechanism into a powerful gene-editing tool. - not the same format.

D. which make us gasp in wonder at physicists who detected previously predicted phenomena, astronomers adding awe-inspiring details about Pluto and biologists honing an immunological defence mechanism into a powerful gene-editing tool. - Out !

So, we are left with C and that is the answer.

To start with the splits.. in the original sentence A , parallel structure is missing , after
Physicists .. verb
Astronomers .. verb
Biologists .. pronoun verb

We need to form a parallel structure with proper parts of speech. Also as the sentence is mentioning about last decade, the sentence must be in past tense

Only option c fulfills the criteria

Option A discussed the error above
Option B physicists that detected previously wrong parallelism. Rest 2 are parallel. Correct verb tense used
Option C physicists detecting, astronomers adding and biologists honing … CORRECT
Option D which make us gasp in wonder at physicists who detected .. wrong verb tense and unparallel 1st structure
Option E astronomers who added .. wrong and not parallel with the other 2

Hence option c
