The length of a line segment is 2 inches. What's the area of the region composed of all points that are within 1 inch of distance
from the line segment, in square inches?
(A) 2+pi/2
(B) 4+pi
(C) 2+pi
(D) 4+2pi
(E) 4+pi/2
The OA is B but after drawing the diagram, i m getting answer 4+2pi (two semicircles +rectangle). pls help

Simple, but easy to miss. I almost made the same mistake.

We have a rectangle and two HALF circles.

So the area here is 2*2 + (pir^2 +pir^2)2 --> 4+pi.

The shape will be

a square, say ABCD with sides 2 inches each + two semicircles on the opposite sides of this square, say one on the edge AB and another on edge CD.

(think the end point of the line under consideration as center and imagine a semicircle with radius of 1 inch)

I think this would be of help :)

Area of 1 circle = r^2 * pi
Area of 1 semi-circle = (r^2 * pi) / 2
Area of 2 semi-circle = [(r^2 * pi) / 2] *2 = r^2 * pi
Now, r = 1, so
Area of 2 semi-circle = 1^2 * pi = pi

Area of middle part = 2 * 2 = 4

Total = 4 + pi
so B
