Correct option is A.

A : The original sentence says that L and C expedition was to do few things. Those are to follow Missippi , look for easy routes, continue and return.

If you observe we have a list and the list must be in parallel.

X,Y, and Z all must be in parallel.

In our case , we have follow examples : A,B,C , and D ( return).

b. to look for easy water routes across the continent, continue to the pacific, and then return. --> This is not parallel to the list
c. lot of errors
d. look for easy water routes across the continue to the pacific, and to return --> This is not parallel to the list.
