The word "data" certainly did come about as the plural of "datum," but it is frequently used as a singular noun, much like "media." I doubt the GMAT would test this distinction, as a quick scan through the OG shows that the word "data" is used as both singular and plural in different OG questions and explanations. (Interestingly, the only SC questions in the 2020 OG that use the word have it positioned such that it isn't clear whether it is intended to be singular or plural, as for example in "data went missing.")

Is “data” singular or plural?
Hi Mahi14, data started out as a plural for datum.

However, the usage of data in singular form is also quite common in English now, especially when the intent is to use data in the sense of information.

Hence, I would be very surprised if an official question ever tests you on singular vs plural usage of data.

Not one of the things you should be worried about, in my opinion.
