The maximum speed that a particular truck can travel is 80 mph. Tim drives that truck on a long highway stretch of 280 miles. The first 120 miles stretch of the highway has a speed limit of 60 mph, whereas the rest of the distance speed limit is 90 mph. If Tim always remain within the speed limits and never drops below 40 mph, then which of the following could be the possible time taken by Tim to travel the entire journey?

I. 4 hours 20 minutes
II. 5 hours 30 minutes
III. 6 hours 45 minutes

A. I only
B. II only
C. I and II only
D. I and III only
E. I, II and III

First, let’s use the maximum rates to determine the minimum time, which equals distance/rate for each part of the trip:

120/60 + 160/80 = 2 + 2 = 4 hours

Next, let's use the minimum rate to determine the maximum time, noting that he will travel at 40 mph for the entire distance.

280/40 = 7 hours

Thus, I, II, and III are all possible.

Answer: E
