The first 120 miles stretch of the highway has a speed limit of 60 mph, whereas the rest of the distance speed limit is 90 mph. If Tim always remain within the speed limits and never drops below 40 mph, then which of the following could be the possible time taken by Tim to travel the entire journey?

I. 4 hours 20 minutes

Asked: Which of the following could be the possible time taken by Tim to travel the entire journey?

For first 120 miles
Speed varies from 40 mph to 60 mph
Time travelled varies from 2 hours to 3 hours

For next 160 (280-120) miles
Speed varies from 40 mph to 80 mph
Time travelled varies from 2 hours to 4 hours

Time taken by Tim to travel the entire journey varies from 4 hours to 7 hours

I. 4 hours 20 minutes POSSIBLE
II. 5 hours 30 minutes POSSIBLE
III. 6 hours 45 minutes POSSIBLE

Max time in which he can reach (When speed in the lowest possible @ 40) = 280/40=7 hrs
Min time in which he can reach (When speed in the lowest possible @ 60 for 120 and 80 for 160)=2 hrs+ 2 hrs = 4 hrs
So all combinations in between is possible

A. I only
B. II only
C. I and II only
D. I and III only
E. I, II and III

First, let’s use the maximum rates to determine the minimum time, which equals distance/rate for each part of the trip:

120/60 + 160/80 = 2 + 2 = 4 hours

Next, let's use the minimum rate to determine the maximum time, noting that he will travel at 40 mph for the entire distance.

280/40 = 7 hours

Thus, I, II, and III are all possible.
