The membership of a club is 40 percent female. If 70 percent of the members of the club are age 35 or older, and 80 percent of those are male, what percent of the females in the club are younger than 35?
A) 20%
B) 26%
C) 35%
D) 60%
E) 65%

I get my answer as 26% but textbook says 65% (which i believe is not true, as the question is asking, what is the total percent of female in the entire club that is younger than 35, so we would do 26/100 AND NOT 26/40)
Please advise as getting very confused on the question terminology.

Hey!
You can use a 2 * 2 matrix to solve the question. Let's assume that the number of members in the club = 100
Step 1 - Create the 2 * 2 matrix. We have two sets of data elements in this question
1) Males & Females
2) Individuals greater and less than 30 years of age.
So plot the information on the matrix as shown below

Step 2 - Fill in the information provided by the statement "the membership of a club is 40 percent female. If 70 percent of the members of the club are age 35 or older"

Step 5 - Solve the question - what percent of the females in the club are younger than 35
Required Percentage = \(\frac{\text{Number of females under 35} }{ \text{Total number of females}} * 100\)
\(\frac{26 }{ 40} * 100\) = 65%

The question asks to find the percentage of young females out of the total number of females in the club: (young females)/(females)*100. Assume there are 100 members.
• 40 members are female.
• 70 members are old.
• 80% of those are male, so 20% of those are female. This means that 70*0.2 = 14 members are old females.
• Since there are 40 females in total, the remaining 26 females are young.
Therefore, (young females)/(total females)*100 = 26/40*100 = 65%.
Answer: E.
