I picked A. but, D is perfect after checking the idiom list. 'determined by' is the correct one.

it is not a matter of just the idiom. subject and verb should also agree; check the question tag ;)

hopping mouse and other rodents SHIVER <---- plural

+1 for D.

A and B => generally mean plural subject. Hence we need a plural verb. A, B and C are out. E seems awkward and incorrect. Left with D.

I understand why we are down to D or E. I picked E as I felt that it gives a better cause/effect relationship.

What makes E incorrect and D better?

Between D & E, "the determined by as a result of," is redundant

D is the best choice

(A) shivers were determined from
(B) shivers were determined because of
(C) shivers was determined through
(D) shiver was determined by
(E) shiver was determined as a result of
