I picked A. but, D is perfect after checking the idiom list. 'determined by' is the correct one.

it is not a matter of just the idiom. subject and verb should also agree; check the question tag ;)

hopping mouse and other rodents SHIVER <---- plural
The modern-day speed ..... WAS determined <---- singular

+1 for D.

A and B => generally mean plural subject. Hence we need a plural verb. A, B and C are out. E seems awkward and incorrect. Left with D.

I chose D and here is why:

(A) shivers {need plural }were {needs singular}determined from
(B) shivers {need plural }were {needs singular}determined because of
(C) shivers {need plural }was determined through
(D) shiver was determined by
(E) shiver was determined as a result of awkward

Consider a Kudos if you like my Answer

Another reminder that I need to be more careful while I read. Picked C.

But now I realize the answer should have been D
