OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The most expensive painting ever sold is the abstract expressionist piece that was created by artist Jackson Pollock entitled No. 5, 1948, and was sold in 2006 by David Geffen for $149.7 million.

A. The most expensive painting ever sold is the abstract expressionist piece that was created by artist Jackson Pollock entitled No. 5, 1948, and was sold in 2006 by David Geffen for $149.7 million

The original sentence uses the correct format of the Superlative (the most) while including a definition of the group being compared (painting ever sold).

The V3 modifying phrase entitled No. 5, 1948 also correctly refers to the previous noun phrase, the Jackson Pollock abstract expressionist piece.

B. The abstract expressionist piece that was created by artist Jackson Pollock entitled No. 5, 1948, is the most expensive painting, and was sold in 2006 by David Geffen for $149.7 million

Not exactly.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The Superlative form, indicated here by the use of the words the most, requires that the group under comparison be defined. However, this answer choice does not provide information about the group of which the painting entitled No. 5, 1948, is the most expensive.

In order for this Superlative to be complete, this group must be defined.

Furthermore, the V3 modifying phrase entitled No. 5, 1948 is incorrectly placed. A V3 must refer to the previous noun or noun phrase, so here entitled No. 5, 1948 seems to be incorrectly referring to artist Jackson Pollock instead of what it should be referring to—his painting.

C. Sold in 2006 by David Geffen for $149.7 million, the abstract expressionist piece that was created by artist Jackson Pollock entitled No. 5, 1948, is a most expensive painting

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The superlative form, indicated here by the use of the word most, must be preceded by the word the. In this sentence, most expensive painting is preceded by a.

Additionally, the Superlative form requires that the group under comparison be defined. However, this answer choice does not provide information about the group of which the painting entitled No. 5, 1948, is the most expensive.

In order for this Superlative to be complete, this group must be defined.

D. The abstract expressionist piece that was created by artist Jackson Pollock entitled No. 5, 1948, was sold in 2006 by David Geffen for $149.7 million making it the more expensive painting ever sold

No, that's not it.

This sentence compares one painting to all the other paintings ever sold. When comparing one thing to 3 or more items (rather than to one other thing), the superlative form the most should be used. This answer choice, however, uses the comparative form more.

E. The most expensive painting ever sold was created by artist Jackson Pollock entitled No. 5, 1948, and was sold in 2006 by David Geffen for $149.7 million

Not quite.

In this sentence the V3 modifying phrase entitled No. 5, 1948 is incorrectly placed. Since a V3 must refer to the previous noun or noun phrase, here entitled No. 5, 1948 seems to be incorrectly referring to artist Jackson Pollock instead of what it should be referring to—his painting.

In addition, the phrase the abstract expressionist piece that is the most expensive painting ever sold was created by artist Jackson Pollock entitled No. 5, 1948 is rather wordy. There is more concise phrasing available.

Hi Bunuel,

In both sentences A and B, the highlighted portion looks exactly the same:

A. The most expensive painting ever sold is the abstract expressionist piece that was created by artist Jackson Pollock entitled No. 5, 1948, and was sold in 2006 by David Geffen for $149.7 million

B. The abstract expressionist piece that was created by artist Jackson Pollock entitled No. 5, 1948, is the most expensive painting, and was sold in 2006 by David Geffen for $149.7 million

I think that the noun phrase in option A is misquoted as the Jackson Pollock abstract expressionist piece in the Official Explanation. Actually, it is the highlighted portion as shown above.

So the V3 modifying phrase entitled No. 5, 1948 is incorrectly placed in both options.

C. Sold in 2006 by David Geffen for $149.7 million, the abstract expressionist piece that was created by artist Jackson Pollock entitled No. 5, 1948, is a most expensive painting

D. The abstract expressionist piece that was created by artist Jackson Pollock entitled No. 5, 1948, was sold in 2006 by David Geffen for $149.7 million making it the more expensive painting ever sold

E. The most expensive painting ever sold was created by artist Jackson Pollock entitled No. 5, 1948, and was sold in 2006 by David Geffen for $149.7 million

B- This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The Superlative form, indicated here by the use of the words the most, requires that the group under comparison be defined. However, this answer choice does not provide information about the group of which the painting entitled No. 5, 1948, is the most expensive.

In order for this Superlative to be complete, this group must be defined.

C- A should be The

D- Should be most

E- entitled No. 5, 1948 seems to be modifying Jackson Pollock-

Diffrence between A & E
A-abstract expressionist piece that was created by artist Jackson Pollock entitled No. 5, 1948- entitled part is modifying abstract expressionist piece

Hence answer is A
