The NASDAQ index has decreased by 80% since year 2000. How many percent should the index increase in order to gain the same value as in year 2000 ?

A. 500%
B. 400%
C. 80%
D. 60%
E. 40%

We can set up a number for the index if not comfortable working with variables. Let the index be 100, decreasing it by 80% brings it down to 20. We need to increase it by 80 to reach 100 again, which is 400% of 20. So B is the answer.

Ans: B

We can let the index be 100 in year 2000. Thus, the current index is 20. In order for 20 to increase back to 100, it needs to increase by:

(100 - 20) / 20 x 100 = 80 x 5 = 400 percent

Answer: B
