C. are displayed so brightly in the department store window, receive

D. being displayed so brightly in the department store window, and receiving

E. displayed so brightly in the department store window, receive

The question is from 800score.com. The answer is E, but I have confusion. If the question were "the chair and sofabed... Would the answer still be E? Or "the chair and the sofabed" would be required to consider them plural. I read something like that in my childhood, but now i can't remember the stuff well... Can anyone please explain....

I think that the chair and the sofabed are plural. Hence the answer is still E

The chair and the sofabed Are plural, but what if The cahir and sofabed...?

Even if it is "The chair and sofabed" the subject is still plural.

Mark and Nick are good friends.

The Taj and the statue of liberty are wonderful structures.

Compound subjects joined with "and" are considered plural.

"new chairs and sofabeds" need plural receive --> C & E left

are not required in C as content between comma's is non-essential

The new chairs and sofabeds, displayed so brightly in the department store window, receives many stares from the passers-by.

E. displayed so brightly in the department store window, receive

Regarding your question: IMHO, "the new chair and the new sofabed..." would also be plural as they are conjuncted with and.

The new chairs and sofabeds, displayed so brightly in the department store window, receives many stares from the passers-by.

A. displayed so brightly in the department store window, receives Wrong Subj. Verb Agreement Error. The new chairs and sofabeds is plural and verb receives is singular.
B. which are displayed so brightly in the department store window, and receives Wrong Subj. Verb Agreement Error. The new chairs and sofabeds is plural and verb receives is singular.
C. are displayed so brightly in the department store window, receive Wrong
D. being displayed so brightly in the department store window, and receiving Wrong
E. displayed so brightly in the department store window, receive Correct

I made silly mistake and marked wrong answer. Later realized that why selected option was wrong.
