Breaking Down the Info:
\(W + L = 102/2 = 51\), we can write this as \(W = 51 - L\). Note we plug in W since we are trying to solve for L.
\(W*L = 540\).
\((51 - L)L = 540\)
\(L^2 - 51L + 540 = 0\). We can try 27*20 first to see if we are close, but since 27 + 20 < 51, we need some numbers that are further apart. We can try 18*30 next to see we get closer to 51, but the numbers are still too close. Finally, the next factor of 540 is 15, and 15+36 = 540 works out.
Answer: C

Most times when our instinct is to set up an algebraic equation, we can Plug In The Answers (PITA). It's usually at least as fast and it usually reduces the probability of making a silly mistake.
I like using B and D.
B: L=38. 2*L = 76. That leaves 26 for 2*W. W=13. Area = 38*13 = 494. That's not it.
D: L = 32. 2*L = 64. That leaves 38 for 2*W. W=19. Area = 32*19 = 608. That's not it.
We need something between B and D.
