The present ratio of almonds to cashews in a certain can of nuts is 2 to 3. If 45 almonds and 30 cashews were to be added to the can, the ratio of almonds to cashews would be 7 to 8. What is the present number of nuts in the can?

A. 30
B. 60
C. 90
D. 120
E. 150

We have that the ratio of almonds to cashews = 2x : 3x

We are given that if 45 almonds and 30 cashews were to be added to the can, the ratio of almonds to cashews would be 7 to 8. We can create the following equation to determine x:

(2x + 45)/(3x + 30) = 7/8

8(2x + 45) = 7(3x + 30)

16x + 360 = 21x + 210

150 = 5x

x = 30

So, there are currently 2(30) + 3(30) = 60 + 90 = 150 nuts in the can.

2k +45 / 3k + 30 = 7/8
16k + 360 = 21k + 210
5k = 150
k = 30

Present nuts = 5k = 150
