Since there is a further discount of 10%, the final discounted price will be (90% of 90) or 81. Since there is a discount of 19%(100-81), answer is (B). ##### General Discussion Math Expert Joined: 02 Sep 2009 Posts: 50585 Re: The price of a certain television set is discounted by 10 pe [#permalink] ### Show Tags 26 Dec 2013, 08:00 1 1 SOLUTION The price of a certain television set is discounted by 10 percent, and the reduced price is then discounted by 10 percent. This series of successive discounts is equivalent to a single discount of (A) 20% (B) 19% (C) 18% (D) 11% (E) 10% Say the original price of the TV was$p, then the final price would be $$(0.9p)*0.9=0.81p$$. Therefore the original price was discounted by 19%.

The price of a certain television set is discounted by 10 percent, and the reduced price is then discounted by 10 percent. This series of successive discounts is equivalent to a single discount of

(A) 20%
(B) 19%
(C) 18%
(D) 11%
(E) 10%

Sol:

Let the price of telvision be 100 and then after first discount price becomes 90 and then again it is discounted by 10% (105 of 90 is 9) so price of telvision becomes 81

So a single discount will be of 19%.

This is a simple question but you could also use a formula Z (Final percentage change) = X+Y+X*Y/100.
X=-10, Y=-10
z= -19 (19% decrease)
