Solution



Given
In this question, we are given that
    • The ratio of the marks obtained by Ted and Barney in their exams is 5: 7
    • 5 times the marks obtained by Ted is 12 more than 3 times the marks obtained by Barney

To find
We need to determine
    • The difference of the marks of Ted and Barney

Approach and Working out
Let us assume the marks obtained by Ted and Barney are 5n and 7n respectively (n = positive integer)
Then, their difference in marks = 7n – 5n = 2n

As per the given condition,
    • 5 x 5n = 12 + 3 x 7n
    Or, 25n = 12 + 21n
    Or, 4n = 12
    Or, 2n = 6

Thus, option D is the correct answer.

Marks obtained by Ted = 5x and five times the marks obtained by Ted =5(5x) = 25x
Marks obtained by Barney =7x and thrice the marks obtained by Barney = 3(7x) =21x

Now 25x – 21x = 12
4x = 12
X =3
Difference between the two marks = 7x – 5x = 2x = 2*3(x = 3) =6(D)
