is because their roots house bacteria that can turn

is that their roots house bacteria turning
is that its roots house bacteria that can turn
being that its roots house bacteria and can turn

I pick D.

'the winged bean' is singular. Eliminate A and C.
D makes no sense. Eliminate.
B/w B & D, B uses 'the reason is because' and D uses 'the reason is that'. D sounds more idiomatic.

definitely answer choice D

What is wrong with "which can turn" Am I right in thinking that "which" refers to bacteria

Yes, 'which' refers to bacteria. However, in this sentence, since the latter half is essential for the former half to make sense (because bacteria converts A to B, the winged bean can survive in tough conditions), that is preferable over which.

The reason why B is incorrect according to me is because it uses 'the reason is because...' which is unidiomatic.

For D.

However, B was very tempting b/c I didn't see that the part after that is essential meaning B could be correct.

I didn't think "is because" is idiomatic. Is this true???

reason....because are redundant. So B is ruled out
