The recent discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb by Egyptologists has provided information that suggests that the wealth accumulated by ancient Egyptian pharaohs was greater than believed.

A. believed.

B. is believed.

C. was believed before.

D. they have believed before.

E. had been believed.

I have more than once stumbled over tackling tenses.

The subject is "the wealth"...and the question is asking...the wealth was greater than...what?
Maybe greater than "the wealth people (had) believed to be...or the wealth (is/was/had been) believed to be...". B, C, and D are out. Narrowed down to A or E. Went for E.
