The regular ticket price for a certain showing of a film was $30, but loyalty card holders paid a discounted price of only $20. Last Tuesday, what was the ratio of the number of discounted tickets to the number of regularly priced tickets purchased for the showing?

(1) Last Tuesday, the total sale of all tickets for the showing was $4,800.
(2) Last Tuesday, the ratio of total discounted ticket sale for the showing to the total regular ticket sale was 2 to 5.

Explanation:

The price of the regular ticket = $30
The price of the discounted ticket = $20
Let the number of regular tickets purchased be R.
Let the number of discounted tickets purchased be D.
We need to find whether the value of D/R can be determined.

Statement (1)

30R + 20D = 4,800

It is NOT possible to rearrange the above equation to determine with certainty the value of D/R. Hence, Statement (1) is insufficient.

Statement (2)

20D / 30R = 2/5

It is possible to determine with certainty the value of D/R. Hence, Statement (2) is sufficient.

B is the correct answer choice.
