B for me. A compares cost of study with similar research and analysis. so wrong
C apart from being wordy and awkward (that there would be an increase ... is wordy from gmat standards) and again wrong comparison in C - increase is being compared with this year's similar research etc...
D - first compared to is not appropriate here because we are trying to show difference between costs not similarity. Second the opening phrase "compared to similar studies" modifies researchers creating an impression that the researchers are being compared to studies.

Same modification issue in E as well

No problem ! OA is B.

I have learnt that SC comparing x with y - always pick choice that has keywords "that / those". In this SC "that" refers to cost. In comparison that / those act as replacement pronouns.

(B) The researchers explained that the average cost of research and analysis performed by the laboratory would increase more than 10 percent, or about $80,000, from that of similar studies this year.

that = singular subject of comparison
those = plural subject of comparison
