The selling price of a house was decreased by 12 percent to $220,000. What was the original selling price of the house?

A. $193,600
B. $196,429
C. $221,200
D. $246,400
E. $250,000

220,000 = 0.88*x

x = 250,000

The other better approach in this particular question is to pick from the answer choices.

The easiest answer choice to start with is 250,000. Usually I would pick answer choice C to know what to pick next.

10% of 250,000 = 25,000

1% = 2,500

so 12% = 30,000

250,000 - 30,000 = 220,000

Answer choice E

We can let n = the original selling price and create the equation:

0.88n = 220,000

n = 250,000

Answer: E
