The set of propositions which was discussed by the panel

how do you discuss a "set"??? It must be"proposition" getting discussed.

I think use of "which" modifies prepositions, and published goes with set. Hence D.

but I don't like the use of "that" here.

I think set is a singular representing a groups of things.....So it has to be C

I go with C for two reasons-

1. Set is singular
2. The statement appears to use a restrictive clause which demands the use of "that"

Also "D" might be incorrect since it does not comply with the punctuation rules which should be used with "which".

I don’t quite agree with the OA. The set is singular and should be followed by has. Can someone provide a better explanation?

After a second look, I think I see why it’s D. Yes the OA should be D.

Can some one explain this please? there is a shift from "were" to "has" and it has confused people.

You can look at it this way.
Set is singular, thus it should be followed by has.
Propositions is plural, so it will take plural verb were.

Breaking the sentence apart to illustrate singularity and plurality,

The set has been published.
The propositions were discussed.

Note that the part introduced by the non-restrictive clause (which were discussed by the panel) modifies propositions ( not the set) Has is used to introduce the modifier of ‘the set’.

The part introduced by the non-restrictive clause is really no needed for the sentence to have meaning. It’s just an addendum to propositions. So if that part weren’t included, the sentence would have read:

The set of propositions has been published in the society journal.

Therefore the answer is D.

agree with D. that would be better over which. the verb should be plural to satisfy the plural subject: propositions. the sentence is poorly structured.

Somehow I feel there is a comma missing from all the choices. Shoudn't there be a comma before a which/that/this?

christoph, consider "a couple of propositions were discussed" if you agree with this, "a set of propositions ..." isn't too far.

I think its just subj-verb agreement

set goes with "has"
which refers propositions, which goes well with "were"
