The severe deference to classical narrative forms that characterized the Augustan novel of manners came to an end when Sir Walter Scott introduced a retrospective vision of the past through his historical novels, anticipated the methodologies used by modern historiographers, engineering a burst of experimentation in the genre of fiction that only escalated during the century that followed.

A) introduced a retrospective vision of the past through his historical novels, anticipated the methodologies used by modern historiographers, engineering

B) had introduced a retrospective vision of the past through his historical novels, anticipating the methodologies used by modern historiographers, and he engineered

C) introduced a retrospective vision of the past through his historical novels, and anticipated the methodologies used by modern historiographers, engineering

D) had introduced a retrospective vision of the past through his historical novels, anticipating the methodologies used by modern historiographers engineering

E) had introduced a retrospective vision of the past through his historical novels and anticipated the methodologies used by modern historiographers, engineering

Explanation:

Into the introductory clause of the argument, author talks about the time( when the severe deference came to an end) in past tense and hence the main clause should carry forward the discussion in same timeline(as reflected by the intended meaning) to maintain parallelism.Hence usage of past perfect is totally incorrect here.

A- incorrect construction, two verbs for the same subject are not connected by any conjugation.

B- Into the introductory clause of the argument, author talks about the time( when the severe deference came to an end) in past tense and hence the main clause should carry forward the discussion in same timeline(as reflected by the intended meaning) to maintain parallelism.Hence usage of past perfect is totally incorrect here.

C- Correct choice.Good construction, both the verbs for same subject connected through conjugation maintaining parallelism in past tense. Also Verbing modifier( engineering...) at the back end properly modifies preceding clause.

D- Same as B. Into the introductory clause of the argument, author talks about the time( when the severe deference came to an end) in past tense and hence the main clause should carry forward the discussion in same timeline(as reflected by the intended meaning) to maintain parallelism.Hence usage of past perfect is totally incorrect here.

E- Same as B. Into the introductory clause of the argument, author talks about the time( when the severe deference came to an end) in past tense and hence the main clause should carry forward the discussion in same timeline(as reflected by the intended meaning) to maintain parallelism.Hence usage of past perfect is totally incorrect here.

Hence C is the correct answer.

OA: C
A: The entire list is connected by commas. Absence of and or such conjunction as a connecter renders it incorrect
B:
i) Had is incorrect
ii) anticipating is incorrect because both are not related events. Scott didn't introduce by anticipating neither did his introduction result into anticipating. Meaning distortion
C) No errors
D)
i)Same as B
ii) Noun modifier engineering modifying modern historians is incorrect. Leads to meaning distortion
E) Had is incorrect

The passage talk about the time when Subject X did work Y, so it has to be written in present form of that time. Hence Had is wrong to add before the verb. We can eliminate B, D, and E.

Among A and C,
A have parallelism issue, between "introduced a retrospective vision of the past through his historical novels" And "anticipated the methodologies used by modern historiographers" Which has to have a structure of X AND Y which is missing in A.
Hence C is the best choice.

Structure is X,and Y. Does the comma before "and" has no significance?

Hello false9,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, this comma appears to be a typographical error; if a list contains only two elements - as is the case in Option C - these elements must be joined by a conjunction ("and" in this case), not the "comma + conjunction" construction; this construction is used to join the last element in a list with more than three elements to the rest of the list.

We hope this helps.
All the best!
